Like many young men in the Dominican Republic, 19-year-old Miguel "Sugar" Santos dreams of winning a slot on an American baseball team. Indeed, his talents as a pitcher eventually land him a slot on a single-A team in Iowa, but culture shock, racism and other curveballs threaten to turn Sugar's dream sour.

María Ramos, a young woman of peasant origin, arrives in the capital and finds work as a domestic servant. Her life is divided by the attraction she feels for two men: the young man in the house where she works, who soon seduces and deceives her, and the teacher who teaches her to read and write. She soon becomes a seamstress in the neighborhood and later a sought-after designer. Her love for the teacher becomes clear.

Ana María is actually a prostitute whose pimp, Arturo, thinks Carlos would be a good client, and urges her to be nice to him. They fall in love, and Carlos proposes marriage to her, indicating he must return to Puerto Rico soon.

The film follows the crime sprees of Antonio Correa Cotto, as he seeks revenge against the people that assaulted his girlfriend.

After successfully executing a robbery, a group of thieves start to unravel. At the same time, a priest is mistaken for one of the members. Will he break the seal of confession and reveal the identity of the guilty party in order to clear his name?

The film, which is an ode to Rafael Hernández's song "Lamento borincano", is a social commentary of the political and social policies of the 40's and 50's which led to the abandonment of what was seen by many as the "pure", "virtuous" life of the finca (farm) for the "corrupting" influence of urban centers like San Juan and New York City.
