In order to find an apartment, dancer Pia pressures the straight-laced clerk Hartwig to pretend to be a prosecutor and pose as her husband. Although Hartwig is acting on behalf of his snobbish girlfriend, he agrees and falls in love with the vivacious blonde. But Pia isn’t quite ready for that yet.

Emotions and feelings should not be confused with sentimentality. Emotion is ancient and more powerful than any artistic expression. The film observes young couples facing difficulties while trying to move their love experiences towards clear decision making. A film full of ideas, details and associations, fictional scenes, documentary footage, archival materials and opera music.

The film, shot as a “historical documentary drama,” describes the so-called Fettmilch Revolt, or civil uprising, in Frankfurt am Main between 1612 and 1616. In the run-up to Matthias' election as Holy Roman Emperor, the citizens are called upon to take an oath to protect and ensure the safety of the electors gathered in the city. As part of the oath, the guild members are threatened with the loss of their rights. Now they want to demand that the council announce the privileges they know nothing about.
