Bacurau, a small town in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their community has vanished from most maps.

“The Caretaker” follows Eliseu, a caretaker who, after 30 years working in an upper-middle-class apartment building, discovers that Santi, the building’s new superintendent, wants to replace him with a swimming pool. Now, he’ll have to use his knowledge of the residents’ lives to find a “way around” the situation and turn the tables in his favor.

Murilo, a grieving musician, falls for Marlene, a nurse trapped in an abusive relationship with criminal Sapinho. Their fates intertwine with Luciana, a vengeful cop, and Ivan, a lawyer with hidden motives, as five lives collide on an irreversible path.

Maria José Novais Oliveira, a black woman, resident on the outskirts of Contagem, already in her 60s, has become a film actress, with an award-winning career in Brazil and internationally. This documentary recalls the image of a unique woman who marked Brazilian cinema in the 2010s.

The work is inspired by Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night", and the whole narrative is built around the festivities of the Folia de Reis and an unexpected love born of this tradition.
