E. T. A. Hoffmann

The Nutcracker is a famous ballet to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which has become one of the symbols of Christmas and New Year.

Based around three of E.T.A. Hoffmann's tales ("Klein Zaches," "The Golden Pot" and "The Sandman"), with the main character being Hoffmann himself, this stop-motion fantasia focuses on the duality between the imaginative universe of his writings and his real-life profession as a government clerk.

A re-staging of the Royal Ballet's 1985 production, with Anthony Dowell - this time as Drosselmeyer - and a new supporting cast. This Royal Ballet production of The Nutcracker (staged by Peter Wright) is a mix of the Balanchine and Vainonen schools of the Nutcracker. The Balanchine version of the Nutcracker emphasizes the child s fantasy: a land of sweets, with comic relief. The Vainonen Nutcracker emphasizes the romantic dreams of an adolescent.

This acclaimed adaptation of Tchaikovsky's fabled masterwork from Graeme Murphy and the Australian Ballet tells the story of a famous Russian ballerina who immigrates to Australia in the 1940s, only to find a newly tumultuous life awaiting. Noel Smith conducts the State Orchestra of Victoria, and Vicki Attard, Siobhan Elsmann, Steven Heathcote and Dame Margaret Scott star in this 1994 production. Nutcracker was recorded live at the State Theatre, Melbourne, Sep. 22, 1994.

This production of the famous ballet has been reset to take place during the 1915 San Francisco World's Fair. From the lovely Waltz of the Flowers to the crystalline beauty of the stunning Snowflake Waltz; each scene is more breathtaking than the last; bringing to life all the well-known and beloved characters with fresh sparkle and compelling originality.

An adaption of E.T.A. Hoffmanns classic tale of horror!
