The operating theatre is ready, the lamps shine bright and the patient’s belly has been shaved and is ready to be operated on. The surgeon hesitates; the knife hovers above the skin. The moment brings back key scenes from her childhood that tell everything about her choice of profession and her hesitation to cut the patient’s skin.

Adolescent school friends Julie and Betz have a lot of things in common, like sharing an interest in sex and cigarettes and not paying attention in class. The latter much to the chagrin of history teacher Herman, who likes to get back at Julie by publicly taking the piss out of her. One day Julie gets really fed up and in an instant decides to follow Herman to his house. Spying on him from the bushes she witnesses something quite unimaginable.

One year after the fatal accident that took away their son Floris when he was 11, the distress of the Mensch family is still visible. Father, mother and their daughter Sacha (now 17) each come to terms with the loss in their own way and become completely alienated from each other. The mother's bouts of depression shape the oppressive mood. The introvert Sacha suffers in these surroundings. She is also about to sit her exams. The truck-driver who killed Floris has been trying to contact the family for a year, but mother anxiously hides his letters. She wants nothing to do with the murderer. Sacha has reached the stage when she wants to know exactly what happened, especially as she, as elder sister, feels guilty about his death. She starts looking for the driver.
