Esther Carena

Born 1898-08-24 · Hannover, Germany

The daughter of a German father and Spanish mother, she studied medicine for one semester and trained in an Italian acrobat troupe. Until 1916 she lived mostly in Italy and performed there in stage sketches. In 1916 she came to Germany and was discovered by Swedish film actor and director Nils Olaf Chrisander. She was presented as a heroine in thrillers, dramas, and melodramas that were staged by Harry Piel at the end of the First World War. She designed many of her own costumes. In 1924 she married the set designer Franz Schroedter and retired from films.

Two French spies, Baron d’Aubigny and Clemence de Montignon, blackmail German engineer Günther Ellinghaus with his gambling debts into handing over his construction plans for the new Ikarus engine. He flees to New York and works as a waiter. When World War I breaks, he signs on as a fireman on a Dutch ship and returns to Europe. He becomes a fighter pilot in Germany and faces the former spies as his enemies. After an emergency landing he is taken into their headquarters. He escapes an attempted murder and fights his enemies in an air battle. Both of them survive and after the war Ellinghaus offers them his hand in reconciliation.

The doctor Ada Haller pursues a successful career as a scientist, in which she comes more and more into conflict with her marriage and the role expected by society as a woman. An extremely progressive and conventional film at the same time, which takes up modern themes and shows parallels to the life of the leading actress: Esther Carena, real name Franziska Lucia Pfeiffer, studied medicine for a semester before she came to film through acrobatics and pantomime; after their marriage in 1924, she withdrew from an extremely successful silent film career into private life.
