Elinor Petipon has been arrested as suspected of the murder of her husband. She seems to have lost her memory, and confronted with the husband's body, she does not even recognize him. The hearing judge decides that she shall be detained in custody for observation.

Count de Faber is working on a new type of explosive, but finds out that Professor Plussman has beat him to it. After an unsuccessful attempt to acquire the formula from Plussman, he breaks into the professor's house, steals the formula, and kidnaps his daughter, Mary. He takes her to Carlsten Fortress.

Fisherman Efraimsson is planning to make some easy money by starting a smuggeling business. Meanwhile his daughter Anna is being courted by local customs officer Lilja, and when Anna discovers her father’s plans, she decides to try to stop the awaiting tragedy.
