In the 1980s, when Latvians living abroad had the opportunity to visit their homeland, she came to Riga to meet her childhood sweetheart, Alfred. Alfrēds waits with white roses, but when she sees a pre-war car whose driver has gone to return some bottles, she gets in to reminisce and drive around Riga.

To do this, he needs to pass a test - walk along the pier to the old fort and carve his name on the wall. On the way back, he is caught in a storm, but he passes the ordeal with honor. An old sailor Yoran, who lives on the decommissioned ship "Izabella", helps the guys in their search for the airplane.

Mārtiņš Venta, the son of a forest ranger, enrolls in a Riga gymnasium and becomes an underground activist, while his classmate, Dace, a teacher's daughter, is expelled from the Riga school for singing the revolutionary song Kā gulbji balti padebeši iet. Dace becomes an actress, but Mārtiņš is drafted into the tsar's army. He refuses to participate in the shooting of a workers' demonstration and is sentenced to exile, but before his deportation, Mārtiņš is allowed to marry Dace in prison.

This screen adaptation of Andrejs Upītis' novella marks the debut in Latvian cinema of two of the first graduates of the Moscow Film Institute - director Varis Krūmiņš and cinematographer Māris Rudzītis.
