Shortly before his wedding day, East German Stephan Busemann goes to West Germany to attend his brother Hubert's fiftieth birthday. At the same time, his son Martin and his daughter-in-law Bettina flee their communist home country in a balloon, what Stephan didn't know. As the East Germans believe he helped them to escape, he isn't allowed to return, so Martin writes a letter to the country's leader Erich Honecker. However, now the West Germans think that Stephan is a spy.

Alexander Belov is a Russian spy, who travels from Soviet-held Latvia to Nazi Germany under an alias of Johann Weiss. His mastery of the German language, steel nerves and an ability to manipulate others help him to use his connections in the SS to ascend the ladder of the German intelligence. He uses his position to identify sympathetic Germans, who help him to procure vital intelligence, and to help local resistance movements in their collective fight against Nazism.

And the title "The Blonde Geisha" turned out to be a nickname for the film's heroine, who had once been called that by her school friend Andreas. At the time, there was more than a hint of romance between the two, but then they lost sight of each other. Now, all of a sudden, a reunion in Prague! This would be a chance for Erika and Andraes to start afresh, but the two are not alone in the Czechoslovakian capital, as if on an island. Instead, the businesswoman from West Germany and the research engineer from East Germany find themselves in the sights of shady people who do not shy away from crime in order to achieve their goals, and so the two main protagonists find themselves in increasingly dangerous situations.

The (West) German military intelligence services want to acquire her farm. At first, their agent attempts to buy the property openly, but her refusal to sell motivates him to try far shadier techniques. He comes up with a relative she never knew about who is entitled to a share in the property and tries to blackmail the township's mayor to get his cooperation. However, the hard-working and honest old lady has an ally in the person of her more sophisticated border, a woman who works in the mayor's office and has been to the West. She takes great delight in foiling the underhanded agent.
