A filmed version of the 1985 revival of the Marc Blitzstein musical. This revival was filmed at the Old Vic, with former members of The Acting Company.

A closeted gay movie director/actor in 1939 finds himself the target of the vicious and unscrupulous attacks by a gossip columnist reporter who goes by the name of Hollywood Confidential.

William Saroyan's Pulitzer Prize-winning play revolves around the denizens of a San Francisco bar in 1939. Lonely, lovelorn, weary or cynical, the characters drift in and out of the bar and each other's lives, giving voice to Saroyan's philosophies as they randomly comment about the impending world war, the beauty of art, and traditional notions of good and evil. At least one of the relationships stands a chance of enduring: a brawny innocent named Tom is falling in love with a vulnerable young prostitute named Kitty. Saroyan himself is heard reciting the play's prologue.

This short comedy about the love of acting features a grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter in three different eras: first backstage at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1900, then backstage at a college theater in 1956, and finally, in the make-up room of the Charlie Rose television program in 1992. One of several short pieces commissioned for the PBS television special Great Performances 20th Anniversary.
