The story of a blind dervish named Bab'Aziz and his spirited granddaughter, Ishtar. Together they wander the desert in search of a great reunion of dervishes that takes place just once every thirty years. With faith as their only guide, the two journey for days through the expansive, barren landscape.

Uncle Hashem, an old villager who was formerly a skilled hunter and now has poor eyesight, decides to hunt a deer and sell it to a mule-driver to fund his journey with the Chavoush group so he can go on a pilgrimage to Ali ibn Musa al-Rida.

Between the years 1941-51, many immigrants went to the south of Iran to work for the oil companies there. A couple, Tal'at and Karamat also go there in hope of a better life. But Tal'at, who is pregnant, catches leperosy and they have to remain outside the city. The husband makes a tea-house and they stay there. Amid the turmoil of the Iranian Revolution, a young woman named Kokab is killed during street clashes. Her parents, Rahmat and Narges, who work as gardeners in a park, report their daughter’s disappearance to the authorities. During the investigation, officials discover that Kokab had been involved in anti-monarchy activities and was killed. The couple are subsequently evicted from their home. Some time later, a young woman named Maryam informs them of their daughter’s fate. Despite their efforts, Rahmat and Narges are unable to locate Kokab’s burial site.
