In postwar Vienna, Austria, Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives penniless as a guest of his childhood chum Harry Lime, only to learn he has died. Martins develops a conspiracy theory after learning of a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, running into interference from British officer Major Calloway, and falling head-over-heels for Harry's grief-stricken lover, Anna.

A comedy loosely based on the life story of Johann Friedrich Böttger, the inventor of Meissen porcelain: In Berlin, the pharmacist Fritz Böttger gains a reputation for being able to make gold and is imprisoned on the orders of the Prussian king. Following in the footsteps of a young lady, he flees to Saxony, but is also imprisoned in Dresden and forced to make gold. Although he does not succeed in this, by chance he discovers how to make porcelain instead. Augustus the Strong appoints him baron and director of the royal porcelain manufactory.

On November 11, 1918, the last day of the First World War , Lieutenant Colonel Klaus Olden desperately tried to hold a lost post with his unit. The rescue appears in the form of pilot Jochen Wendler, who shows up with his plane and drops ammunition. When Jochen's machine is shot down immediately, Klaus manages to pull him out of the wreck at the last second. Both are injured and taken to the hospital , where they are cared for by the attractive nurse Barbara, a childhood friend of Jochen. The two men form a blood brotherhood and drive together with Barbara to East Prussia , where they want to visit relatives of Jochen on their estate . But the relatives' yard was destroyed in the war. France in the 15th Century: The country is marked by the wars with England and internal power struggles. King Charles sees himself powerless against the state. Doctor von Aldenhoff takes the stranger in and begins to educate her according to western European standards. In her new home, the girl, Luscha, gets to know Robert Lorm, a rather well-travelled man, and falls in love with him. Eventually, she decides quite unilaterally that they're going to build a new home and life together. A plaster of paris mask of the girl's face is made for the doctors to keep as a remembrance of Luscha. But as soon as the mold is removed from her face, she suddenly seems to become an entirely different woman.
