Old captain Barkhahn keeps on going bankrupt with all his business endeavors. He’s made for the sea and not for the land. His newest idea is a family-run bed and breakfast with “Familienanschluß," and so Captain Bräuer moves in and quickly shows interest in Barkhahn's daughter Käthe, whom he met and bugged earlier already. Meanwhile, the bailiff is on Barkhahn's back, and the next catastrophe is on the rise.

The German estate owner Corner travels to Marseilles, looking for his daughter. He had a relationship with a French aristocrat before the World War and knows she was pregnant, when he had to return to Germany. The War separated them however and the mother died giving birth to his child. He knows neither the name of his daughter, nor where she is living. A lawyer named Beauchamps is tasked with finding her and one days introduces a young singer named Isabel to him. She is with great probability the one, who is being sought. She follows her father back to Germany, but only with great reluctance.

1936: Fahnrich Peter serves on a torpedo boat. Peter loves Carmita, the pretty sister of a fellow seaman. In an imaginary Scandinavian country, an ambitious radical buys an indebted estate in order to become a member of parliament as a local resident, which he ultimately succeeds in doing. Salvation in the party turmoil comes in the form of a military dictatorship under the determined Governor General Werkonen.
