Growing up on the grounds of one of Germany's largest psychiatric hospitals is somehow - different. For Joachim, the director's youngest son, the patients are like family. They are also much nicer to him than his two older brothers, who drive him into fits of rage. His mother, painting watercolors, longs for Italian summer nights instead of constant German rain, while his father secretly, but not discreetly enough, goes his own way. From the translucent golden eggs of the Tibetan bearded vulture to those of the British guillemot with their Jackson Pollock-like splashes, German ornithologist Max Schönwetter (1874-1961) collected them all. He devoted his life to oology, the study of birds’ eggs. But while Schönwetter created order in his world of eggs, chaos broke out in the world around him on the eve of the Second World War.

After a small sample of fabric, the eternal student and occasional dealer Paul ends up in the emergency room. Enraged, father Willi takes his offspring back to his sleepy Westphalian home, where foxes and rabbits still say goodnight to each other. He locks him up in the dog kennel on his farm and makes him memorize a doctor's novel to get him out of his head and teach him about real life. But not only Paul's girlfriend Lena, but also two dealers miss Paul and set off in search of him...

Like every morning, Linda sits at the breakfast table with her children. But there's a catch: Dad hasn't been sitting at the table with his family for a long time. Instead, Fritz is sleeping in the camper van in the garden. While Linda hopes that the two of them will soon find their way back to each other, all signs point to separation for Fritz.
