France, 1983. The biggest architectural competition in history is launched by the new socialist president, François Mitterrand. Coveted by all the biggest international architectural firms, the open-call competition is surprisingly won by an unknown: Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, an architecture teacher from Copenhagen. Until then, the fifty-year-old Dane had built only four buildings: his home, and three small chapels.

A cowboy arrives in a town in search of his daughter, a native policewoman arrests various offenders in a snowy landscape, while her niece, a basketball coach, reunites with her grandfather for a decisive journey that will shape her future, and a bird flies through time and space and begins to enter the minds and dreams of a native tribe in the Amazon jungle.

A middle-class family, on the surface happy and perfect, are close to disintegration due to the father's escalating alcoholism. After several years of failure and broken promises, they finally give him an ultimatum. However, they must soon recognize that the solution rests on everyone's shoulders.

Lasse is a disillusioned truck driver from Jutland in Denmark. He sometimes drinks and drive and one day a young woman jumps in front of the truck and Lasse immediately hits the brakes. That young woman is René, someone Lasse hasn't seen in 15 years. René gets into the truck despite Lasse protesting and a journey begins that day that will turn their lives upside and down and reveal secrets from the past.
