When Edith Howland's husband abandons her for a younger woman, leaving her with their alcoholic son and his senile uncle, she begins recording details of an imaginary, much more successful life where she has friends and grandchildren. However, this diversion soon grows unhealthy when she becomes slowly convinced that the fantasies are real.

The Second World War is over and now begins in post-war Germany, the reconstruction. Jakob Formann sees his chance here and begins a rapid rise as an entrepreneur.

The well-known pimp Jack Förnbeisser meets the married journalist Marlene Ellermann and is immediately fascinated by the beautiful and cultured woman. Spontaneously, he offers 100,000 marks for a night with Marlene. Outraged, the author refuses, but shortly afterwards meets Jack professionally to write a "portrait of a pimp." After a boozy stroll through the neighborhood together, which Marlene can only remember in fragments the next day, Jack transfers 100,000 marks to her and thanks her for the "wonderful night." Marlene is stunned, but meets with Jack again...

Bertha Kinsky works as a governess in the Suttner household and has an affair with Arthur Suttner, the son of the house, who is a few years younger than her. When the affair is discovered, she is forced to leave the house and gets a job with Alfred Nobel. Nobel has become very rich thanks to the invention of dynamite. The somewhat reclusive Nobel and the prudent Bertha quickly take a liking to each other. But one day, Arthur Suttner appears on the doorstep, having broken with his family in order to marry Bertha. Bertha marries him and life drives the penniless couple to Russia, where they are confronted with the horrors of war. This experience turned Bertha von Suttner into a successful author on pacifism. She continued to cultivate a close friendship with Alfred Nobel. Nobel detested the war, but gradually realized that he could go down in the history books as a "warmonger" thanks to the invention of dynamite.

Village policeman Gasperlmaier has a tough time in his third case. He's immediately summoned from a funeral to the bathroom of a family home. There, he finds a dead body. Together with his new superior, the investigation begins. But the first death is followed by a second. More and more pieces of the puzzle are piecing together a grim picture from the past. There's little time left for Gasperlmaier and his new boss, and it seems his mother-in-law is also involved.

It is an eerie, cold evening, with the wind whistling through the trees. In a remote pub, a few people have gathered around a single candle and are telling each other scary stories. A man from the next table joins them and tells them about a mysterious apparition. An eerie face regularly appears on the wall of his room, giving him the creeps. The stranger recounts in detail how this gruesome occurrence is bringing him to the brink of a nervous breakdown. Whose face is it? Is it that of a dead person?
