Samuel Tilman

In a sumptuous lakeside hotel, the perfect routine falters when disaster strikes.

Four strangers find themselves groggy and disoriented on a deserted island covered with surveillance cameras. Stripped of their belongings, they each hold a phone—blank, with no apps or signal. Suddenly, a message from a masked captor appears: they have 48 hours to figure out why they've been taken if they want to survive. To do so, they’ll be allowed two minutes of connexion at random intervals. But if they try to contact loved ones or alert the authorities, their mission ends, and they'll be executed.

Ultimate refuge for the leftovers of the american dream, the motels in the United States houses a population of drifting humans who, from crisis to crisis – economic and personal – have been dispossessed of everything. Some of them lost it all. Some of them left it all. Some still have dreams. Some of them don’t remember well, sucked by daily survival. Everyone struggles with fragments of life that remain in this precarious nest. Portrait of a disenchanted America. Diving in its abyss.

Samuel is 23 when he arrives in Rwanda as an audiovisual facilitator at the French Cultural Centre in Kigali. Having made this choice to avoid the classic military service, he finds himself without a camera in a country at war. The French army has even set up camp within the Cultural Centre. During the 18 months he spends there, the warning signs accumulate, but Samuel doesn't believe or doesn't want to believe them. What he is told seems impossible to him: France cannot possibly support a regime that commits or encourages such atrocities. It doesn't keep him though from enjoying the country and partying, but doubt creeps in, his certitudes start wavering, and Samuel finally opens his eyes.

Three climbers are stranded on mountain as darkness sets in.
