Mrs. Wallace Williams is much given to conversation and, when she and her husband have a word battle, she of course wins out, making her husband exceedingly cross.

Jeb Russell and his son Matt run a bootlegging operation in the basement of the New England schoolhouse where Mercy Brent teaches. When her sweetheart John Hale and his revenue agents attempt to break up the operation, John is accused of killing Jeb during a struggle. A tramp named Brent later admits to the murder, claiming that Matt was his accomplice. The police discover Matt's image imprinted on a schoolhouse window by a lightning bolt, verifying Brent's story. Meanwhile, Matt abducts Mercy and takes her aboard the bootleggers' schooner. John and his men come to her rescue and Matt is arrested.

Nancy is a restless young girl tired of living on a plantation with her three old-maid aunts. Her life brightens when her cousin Lola comes visiting from New York. What she doesn't know is that Lola is fleeing a scandal that erupted when she was caught running around on her husband with her lover, David. It's not long before David comes looking for her, and Nancy falls in love with him. Lola sees a way out of her problem--if she can get Nancy and David to hook up, it will take the heat off of her. Nancy's aunts, who want to get rid of her, are all for the plan, and soon Nancy and David get married. However, things don't quite work out for everyone the way they planned.

Billy Speedwell, the man in the case, got hold of the old boy and just knocked the spots off him for butting into his affairs. From that time on, Mr. Crabb changed his mind about doing good, and the next morning he cleared all the hobos out of his office.
