Victim of the breakdown in trust and communication between his estranged parents 12 year old Sem de Rijn has not seen his father for 6 months when he arrives at his school one afternoon and offers the boy a holiday. They run away together driving through Holland and Belgium, camping out and generally having the kinds of adventures a boy dreams of until pursued by the police and torn between his love for his mother and his father, Sem and his father return to face the music.

Martijn receives little attention from his parents, who run a village bazaar, and is often left to his own devices. He has plenty of imagination, but cannot live up to the expectations placed on him. If he fails his school exams, he will be doomed. Only his grandfather in the retirement home understands him and listens to his stories. When a film crew arrives in his hometown to shoot a fairy tale movie, Martijn is chosen for the lead role and his grandfather is given the role of wizard.

A woman disguises herself as a man to avoid prosecution for murdering her lover fifteen years ago. Her travels provide her with an anonymous cloak that allows her freedom of movement but little peace of mind. Nearing middle age, the guilt and weariness of an empty life has her contemplating suicide as the only way out of her dilemma.
