Steve McClure, born 25 July 1970, is a British rock climber and climbing author, who is widely regarded as Britain's leading and most important sport climber for a period that extends for over two decades, starting from the late 1990s. In 2017, he created Rainman, Britain's first-ever 9b (5.15b) sport route, and by that stage was responsible for developing the majority of routes graded 9a (5.14d) and above in Britain. Although mainly known for sport climbing, McClure has also been one of the most successful British traditional climbers, and British onsight climbers (in both sport climbing and traditional climbing formats). McClure started climbing early as both parents were keen climbers, a…

Accomplished all-round climber Neil Gresham seems to be the fine wine of UK climbing; at 50 he realises his hardest traditional project, Lexicon. The steep and blank headwall of Pavey Ark’s East Gully in the Lake District has a smattering of tiny holds and notably no protection. A successful ascent would rank it as one of the most significant. Such a stunning line has not gone unnoticed by the UK’s other trad masters as entertaining cameos from Dave MacLeod and Steve McClure bring additional depth and credibility. We also witness one of the biggest lead falls ever captured, scary stuff!

One of Great Britain’s most distinguished climbers, Steve McClure has spent the last few decades scaling cliffs and crags all over the world. In spite of his globetrotting status, he likes nothing more than to tackle challenges on the rock walls of his home country. This is how, after sending Rainman in Malham in 2017, he became one of only a handful of people to climb 9b. In 2019, he finally settled a long overdue score by onsighting Nightmayer, a hard, complex, and committing route!

In 1988, Paul Eastwood and his climbing partner became the first men to free-climb Britain's deepest open cave shaft, rising from within the UK's largest underground chamber and traversing around its highest unbroken waterfall, three times the height of Niagara falls. The iconic route will have gone unrepeated for almost 40 years. Decades later a new team of climbers, Olympian Molly Thompson-Smith and legend Steve McClure, will tackle the climb once again, hoping to join the few who have ever free-climbed the route.
