After returning from the Eastern Front to their small Croatian village as veterans of the First World War, Jovan Stanisavljević (nicknamed Čaruga) and his comrade known only as Mali join forces with the gang led by a local bandit and communist revolutionary Boža The Red. Pained by grief, Mor begins to close himself off from the world, however, his curse begins to slowly transform him into something else.

Zlatko Kovač, a provincial professor, gets the job in the big city's school, only to find out that his red-employment is not random. Professor Toth, the man he replaced, has died under the strange circumstances. Kovac meets a variety of strange people in his school's collective, and it was not long before they came up with the new body. However, the police is unable to solve the case, but he takes the matter into his own hands and setting a trap for a murderer on a school manifestation.

During the WWII, the communist resistance, with the help of a few local anti-fascists, makes sabotage and obstructs the actions of the Yugoslav quislings.

The film deals with issues of life and work in self-governing socialist enterprises, i.e. the problems caused by the application of the Law on Associated Labor which passed several years before. The protagonists are the metal company workers who are launching a strike due to the reduction of salaries.
