Hamburg-based photographer Kim Wenrich returns to her hometown of Nebra to give a statement to the police. Her father, Paul, is suspected of murder: he allegedly stabbed his former best friend, Arko Haumann, during an argument. Decades earlier, the two men had discovered the Bronze Age Nebra Sky Disc, one of the most significant archaeological finds of the 20th century. Detective Ritter is counting on Kim’s help to solve this strange case. He wants to know why that sensational discovery turned the treasure hunters into such bitter enemies. Convinced of her father’s innocence, Kim dismisses the idea the disc carries a deadly curse, a superstition feared by some in the small town. Although she initially intends to return to Hamburg as soon as possible, she begins to pursue the truth after finding a mysterious letter from her father and being reminded by her childhood friend Jonny of a secret from their youth. In doing so, she embarks on a journey into the darkness of buried memories.

In 1903, Jan Anskath and his half-brother Martin are living in Rajgorod at the border between Russia and Prussia – Jan on the Russian, Martin on the Prussian side. Both are occasionally smuggling stuff over the border. But while Jan acts from political conviction and is smuggling illegal writings over the border, Martin is only interested in the money. That is why he does not question his shadowy client when he sneaks out refugees into Russia. But then it becomes evident that the distinguished gentleman has robbed the refugees from all of their belongings, only to turn them over to the authorities of the Czar.

October 1918: Karl Liebknecht is released from prison and Berlin workers celebrate his release. Although WWI is almost over, the German Kaiserreich in vain sends its last reserves to the slaughter. The working class is in a rebellious mood; the uprising of Kiel’s sailors against war and militarism sets off a call for revolution led by Liebknecht. On November 9, Liebknecht declares the Free Socialist Republic of Germany. But pro-Kaiser military and right wing Social Democrats oppose him.

East Berlin, late 1970s: Because she doesn't really have any particular career aspirations, Marta becomes a nurse. And since true love is a long time coming, the 17-year-old seduces Monty, the young man next door. Then there are her parents' marital problems. Fritz Schmenkel, a farm worker and soldier in the fascist Wehrmacht, deserts in Belarus in 1941. He wants to survive, makes his way to Russian farmers and comes into contact with Soviet partisans who, after long interrogations by the German teacher and current partisan Miron, take him in as one of their own. Schmenkel proves his reliability in a number of daring actions and is awarded the Order of the Red Banner. In the winter of 1943/44, he is given a reconnaissance mission and falls into the hands of the fascists in Minsk. After days of interrogation, which he withstands, the Nazis execute him.

Young lieutenant Riedel, the leader of a motorized unit of NVA riflemen, is always concerned about his men. Thus, he is all the more happy that everything is running smoothly with the new recruits when he returns from his honeymoon. It seems to him that lance corporal Weißenbach, who is not only the oldest of the men but also a formidable armoured personnel carrier driver, has been a reliable stand-in for him. Thus, Riedel is all the more surprised when he learns that Weißenbach boosts the squad's performance with partly questionable methods.

But Winfried, currently an embittered man, is given a chance in the movie's story to regain human sovereignty.
