In this comedy set in Helsinki in 1940, laid-off office girls Sirkku, Irkku, and Mirkku forget their everyday worries in the company of cheerful musicians Vallen, Jalle, and Nalle.

Katariina, an orphaned girl from the north, travels to Helsinki to live with her distant relative Mauri, who has been appointed her guardian. The unpretentious child of nature irritates, amuses, and charms Mauri, who is accustomed to high society, and his bachelor friends.

The story of Pekka Aalto, who lives with his aunt and to whom district judge Anders bequeaths a large estate. No one knows who this young Pekka Aalto is, and the whole truth will not be revealed until six months later in the supplementary will. Anders' sisters do everything they can to prevent Pekka from getting the estate promised to him in the will.

An artist bases a painting for a revealing lingerie ad on a photo of a girl he had found torn from a magazine, not knowing that the girl is in fact the daughter of the Finnish minister of finance. A scandal is about to erupt, and the artist is given 48 hours to find a strikingly similar-looking female model who could serve as his alibi. The minister's daughter decides to fool the artist by pretending to be a lowly girl of the streets, whom the artist then recruits as his "model".

Raili moves away from her mean aunts. The young woman enjoys her independent life, but debt, a deceitful boyfriend, and getting fired from her office job get her into trouble. However, Raili's uncle Salomoni and his wife Salli support their relative. Olli, a lawyer, also wants to help Raili, who has fallen victim to blackmail.

The two fall in love and decide to escape to Italy via Denmark where they have planned to get married. There are always complications because Mauritz's grandmother doesn't want him to marry below him - she has decided that Mauritz is to marry the Swedish beauty, Ingeborg Liliecrona.

Timo plays a jealous husband who shoots his wife's lover on stage. The theater director urges the shy young man to gain experience with women and guns before the premiere. Both become familiar when Timo gets caught up in the schemes of his fellow actress Aili and a Russian spy ring.

The tarragon regiment moving to the small town charms the women of the locality. Only trade counsellor Ottilia Mähönen considers them brutal barbarians and is horrified when her daughter Irja gives her room to cavalry master Osmo Kyrö who needs accommodation.

The priest's daughter, Vappu Kankare first irritates and then admires the ambitious habitant, Jalmar "Jali" Kinnunen. After the studies, Vappu and Jali get married, but the marriage is disappointing.

Väinö Kehkonen, the head of a Helsinki-based construction company, takes his wife and the Ärmälä couple to Dr. Puosu for a rejuvenating hormone injection, which causes them to behave like children. The director, previously known for his lack of drive, gains energy and enthusiasm from the injection, both in his business and personal life.

Irmeli wants a certain job as a secretary but finds out that she would have to be married in order to get the vacancy. She lies that she has recently married and then gets a stranger from a nearby restaurant to pose as her husband. Complications arise when they have to continue their charade.

Composer and program director Harri forms a quartet, recruiting Apon, Teika, Kauko, and Olli as members. Based on an idea from Olli's beloved Raija, the ensemble is named the Kipparikvartetti.
