40 years ago in Mexico, a group of women filmmakers gathered to make films dealing with taboo subjects, gender violence, rape, feminicide, clandestine abortion, labor discrimination. They called themselves “Cine Mujer” and were active as a collective for over 10 years. Today they reflect on violence against women and their continuous struggles, which are still prevalent in modern society.

People of different generations and sociocultural contexts share their stories to reveal the secrets that keep their bodies, rebuilding themselves through a tour of themselves: Kany, a trans person; Julia, who has known she was a lesbian since she was a child; Erika, a woman who has dealt with being overweight; Natalia, who has survived cancer; and Rosaly, a straight woman who is recognizing the reasons for her failed relationships.

Midwives from around the world travel to Mexico and Brazil summoned by Naolí, a Mexican midwife, in order to learn further and make of their profession an art; just as mothers and fathers in the process of giving birth, they simultaneously open up their bodies and souls to share with us the feminine nature. The First Smile is an emotive work which recovers ancestral knowledge, that shouldn’t have been forgotten.

The film describes in a simple way the division between girls and boys through education by assigning them different behaviors based on their sex difference.
