The official Podkolesin is tired of his bachelor life, but at the same time he is afraid to disrupt his usual routine. His friend Kochkarev arranges a marriage between Podkolesin and the merchant's daughter Agafia Tikhonovna. It takes a lot of effort for Kochkarev to persuade his friend to go to his bride. But at the last moment, Podkolesin, frightened by the impending changes, runs away.

This, the first Soviet depiction of Peter the Great, set the stage for what would become the post-Revolutionary line concerning the early Romanovs. Rulers like Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great were widely admired for their dedication to Russia and their absolute determination to enhance her position in the world. But praise for the hated later Romanovs conflicted too heavily with the very beliefs that had brought about the Revolution in 1917.

Film adaptation of The Golovlyov Family ("Господа Головлёвы), a classic novel by Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin. Dullness and horrors of life, spent in destroying everybody around him, finally makes him to slowly realize things went somehow wrong. Half-mad, apparently, he goes to the cemetery to "ask for forgiveness" from his mother Arina Petrovna, and dies somewhere along his way, his frozen corpse found the next day.
