Julie Andrews starred in Hollywood productions that have become iconic movies, winning an Oscar for her performance as Mary Poppins, a symbol of the magic of musicals from the 1960s. And yet, behind the squeaky-clean image hides a much more tortuous career, with its moments of glory and tough times, all of which explain the longevity of a story that is still being written.

Hi Gang! is a 1941 British comedy film directed by Marcel Varnel and starring Bebe Daniels, Ben Lyon and Vic Oliver. It was a spin-off from the popular radio series Hi Gang!.

In turn-of-the-century London a young music publisher fights both competitors and piracy in a time where author's royalties were still unprotected.

Robert Spencer is having an affair with his wife's friend Hilda. When a man approaches Hilda, proclaiming his love for Robert's wife Claire, Hilda tries to matchmake. Claire uncovers her husband's infidelities and decides to divorce him and take a chance on Michael.

A plastic surgeon dispatches his assistant to bring in a young woman who is scheduled to have a procedure done. Unfortunately, the assistant brings in the wrong woman.

Set just after the end of WWII (but filmed in the middle of it) in a time of general euphoria at having won the war, with full employment and general happiness for all (or nearly all). Peter, the young wastrel son of a hard working hotel owner doesn't like the idea of having to work for a living. He discovers a society of "White Elephants" who are quite willing to be poor as long as they don't have to work. They are protected and guided by Nina (Margaret Lockwood) and her precocious sister Heidi (Jean Simmons).

There is a crisis in suburban politics because of a store magnate's plans to build a warehouse on the site of the local allotments. Mr and Mrs Penny lead the local outcry against such vandalism and Mr Penny, as usual, blunders into trouble with innocent folly.

A talent agent makes the mistake of becoming too involved with one of his clients.

Humorous commentary over on and off-duty scenes of Czechoslovak Army soldiers, and some Czech airmen in RAF, shows how these allies have tried to adapt to the peculiarities of British life (food, language, weather) during their military training in Great Britain, while they wait until their country (symbolised by scenes from the Sokol of 1938) is free again.

A young riveter working high up on a steel girder watches a girl practising a tap-dance in a building opposite, and while applauding her, he loses his balance and falls.
