The end of the 19th century. Grigory Petrovich Tsybukin, a prominent rural bourgeois, is famous for his wealth and stinginess. His whole life revolves around increasing his capital, but money does not bring happiness to his family, only problems.

The film is based on real historical facts of the First World War. The action takes place in Galicia. Metropolitan Andrey, the head of the Uniate Church, who wants to permanently link Western Ukraine with the Austrian crown, assigns Roman, a young cornet of the Austrian army, to guard the archives at St. George's Cathedral. But Roman, having familiarized himself with the contents of some materials, is going to make secret documents public...

The rich peasant Solopii Cherevyk goes to the Sorochyntsi fair to sell wheat. His quarrelsome wife Khivria and daughters Paraska, Horpyna and Motria go with him. At the fair, Paraska meets a guy named Hrytsko and falls in love with him. But her stepmother Khivria is against their wedding. In parallel, the events related to the mysterious story about the "red scroll" develop.

During the years of perestroika, Igor Shitikov, a young and capable leader, was offered to head a lagging collective farm. After the renovation, he would be able to supply the factory workers of a large industrial association with agricultural products.
