A Serbian artillery battery of the Combined Division makes a forced march to the Cer Mountain in western Serbia to meet Austro-Hungarian troops, who have invaded the country by crossing over the Drina River. A chronicle of the Battle of Cer; a landmark battle of World War I and the first Allied victory over the Central Powers.

Through several entangled stories, province atmosphere is shown, in which new ideas are hard to penetrate. Parallel with the seventh anniversary of peasant's cooperative farm, activity of a priest, who wants to restore the iconostasis, is followed. Two concentration camp prisoners are taken by Nazis to disable un exploded bombs in German towns. When they work on the ruins, with their guards safely away, they enjoy a few precious moments of freedom.

A group of former members of the Gestapo participates in espionage activities, helped by a group of locals, dissatisfied with the new authorities. However, members of the Yugoslav secret police, the infamous UDBA, are on their track. This is the first Yugoslavian spy film.

Under a police pursuit, Pavle tries to transfer a group of illegals on a free liberated territory. Pavle hopes to find a hideaway at an old friend Stevan, but these expectations fail. However, help unexpectedly comes from Stevan's little son Aca.
