Monitor was a BBC arts programme that was launched on 2 February 1958 and ran until 1965. Huw Wheldon was the first editor from 1958 to 1965. He was also the principal interviewer and anchor. Wheldon set about moulding a team of talents, including John Schlesinger, Ken Russell, Patrick Garland, David Jones, Humphrey Burton, John Berger, Peter Newington, Melvyn Bragg, Nancy Thomas and Alan Tyrer. Monitor ranged in subject over all the arts. Wheldon's Monitor lasted until he had "interviewed everyone I am interested in interviewing", and he was succeeded by Jonathan Miller for the series' last season.

In a town in Connetticut in 1906, newspaper publisher Miller has problems with his sixteen-year-old son Richard, who reads Wilde, Shaw, Swinburne and Ibsen. Richard loves the neighbor's daughter with touching naivety, which the neighbor finds sinful. The problems of puberty are solved idyllically with a great deal of understanding and bourgeoisie. The everyday life of an average family with small disasters and small victories oscillates between heart and sentimentality and the wilderness of awakening love is nothing more than a teasing maze.

On the Fourth of July holiday in 1906, the Miller family prepares to celebrate in their New England home. Young Richard, 16, is a thoughtful and poetic youth in love with a neighbor girl, Muriel. When Richard's messages of poetry to Muriel upset her prudish father, Muriel is forbidden to see him and forced to write a letter saying she wishes no more to do with him. Richard, devastated, sets out to learn the evil ways of the world and put his broken heart behind him.

Long Day's Journey into Night focuses on one day in the life of the Tyrone family. Youngest son Edmund is ill, and the family are worried about mother Mary's nerves.

Cornelius "Con" Melody is an Irish tavern keeper in New England who lives in reverence of his former days as a nobleman and decorated officer in the British army during the Napoleonic wars. Impoverished now, he struts about in his uniform and plots to make money by manipulating the love of his daughter for the son of a wealthy manufacturer. His daughter sees through his façade and his chicanery and begins to plot for herself.

A cynical, self-hating, failed actor visits the gruff, earthy daughter of his scheming Irish tenant farmer and passes a soul-baring night of guilt-ridden confessions, tenderness, and absolution.

This turn of events leads to heartache and tragedy for everyone involved.
