Maro Kodou
Born 1934-06-21 · Athens, Greece
Maro Kontou (Greek: Μάρω Κοντού; born 21 June 1934 - 15 July 2026) was a Greek actress and politician. She performed in more than sixty films since 1954. Maro Kontou's first film appearance was just after she had started at the National Theater, with a silent role in the Finos Film film "Happy Beginning" (1954) by Dinos Dimopoulos. Roles in films by other producers followed ("The Man on the Train", "Crime in Kolonaki", "Crime Behind the Scenes") before making her debut with a leading role in the Finos Film film "The Yellow Gloves" (1960) as the wife of the jealous Nikos Stavridis. She returned to Finos Film in 1963, starring alongside Dinos Iliopoulos in the film "My Friend Lefterakis". She participated in over 50 film productions, including George Tzavellas' film "Antigone" (1961) as Ismene, as well as the timeless film (also by Tzavellas) "A Woman Afraid of Man" (Damaskinos-Michailidis, 1965), where together with George Konstantinou they played the Kokovikos couple, one of the most famous couples in Greek cinema. Maro Kontou's last collaboration with Finos Film was in the unforgettable "An Italian Woman from the Kulypseli" (1968) in the central role alongside Alekos Alexandrakis. The 13 films in which she co-starred with Lambros Konstantaras ("The Old Man", "The Squirrel Who Became a Lamb", "Too Bad for Your Boy", etc.) were also particularly successful. With the decline of commercial cinema from the mid-1970s, her choices became fewer and fewer. Perhaps the role in the film "The Big Cannon" (1981) with Thanasis Vengos stands out. It took a long period of absence from cinema for Maro Kontou to return in 2012 with a role in the film "If" by Christoforos Papakaliatis. During her career, her television appearances were limited ("Enochoi", "Treis sto Gyro", "To Pathos", etc.). In 2021, he was back on television screens with a featured role in the series "Land of Olives".
