For 750 years, the local colosseum was the only place to go if you were looking for some action. What began as human sacrifice during funeral rites for wealthy families resulted in a violent, bloody battle staged in front of 50,000 fans. Gladiators were slaves, but the archaeological remains at Pompeii and the Roman Colosseum reveal that they were held in the same esteem as modern day sports stars. Gladiators explains how this "sport" was used as a tool of political power and how the Gladiators rose up and waged war against their owners. Two versions are available: presenter-free, and presenter-led, with Terry Jones of Monty Python fame.

The strange story of a man with an identity crisis. For 47 years. Alec Krawczynski has lived in Scotland. He is known as Alec the Pole. But his real name is not Krawczynski and he has never been to Poland. He came from the Ukraine and for nearly 50 years has kept a deadly secret. Now, as the Ukraine reaches out for independence, he discovers members of his family are still alive. He returns to the Ukraine to discover if his country and family are ready to forgive him for being, in his own words, a traitor.

A mini-series which follows the history of atheism.

Sam was 11 and was not quite sure where he lived. The only thing he knew for certain was that he went to Woolverstone Hall - a stately mansion in Suffolk which is now a boarding school. It's not a traditional public school, but a comprehensive - and it's run, improbably, by the Inner London Education Authority. For boys like Sam, Woolverstone is security. Many of the pupils here come from deprived homes. It's more expensive than Eton. ILEA wants to close Woolverstone, but Headmaster, Richard Woolett , is not prepared to give up....
