After having spent 22 months in prison, Viktor Pálos returns to his homeland, where he is going to be involved in the robbery committed by his relatives.

Based on a popular stage musical comedy by Károly Bakonyi and Andor Gábor, the film tells the story of a young engineer who tries to construct a railway in his hometown, helped by the Count's daughter, Marcsa (Lili Berky).

The story takes place in a small village manor-house off Vásárosladány. Sándor leads a quiet life with his wife, son and the now poor relatives of his wife, one which is characterized by the monotony of rural boredom. The arrival of another poor relative, Kitty, a young girl brought up in America, whose way of thinking reflects modern times, puts an end to this overwhelming monotony.

Gyozo falls in love with a wealthy banker's daughter, but faces stiff resistance from his family who has already chosen a girl for him. Meanwhile, Gyozo's marriage is opposed by his fiancee's uncle.

The ancient families of Kont and Hadhazy have long been at war with each other. Lord Cont is a supporter of Vienna's rule, while Hadhazy is a follower of the Hungarian revolutionary Kossuth. Faithful to his word, Michael Tímar, captain of the St. Barbara, becomes the guardian of Kondya, daughter of a Turkish aristocrat on the run. Later, he weds the grateful young Turkish girl whom he saved from the waters of the Danube. While skillfully managing his wife's fortune, entrepreneur Tímar becomes an important wholesaler of wheat and exports his products to Brazil. But his marriage of convenience proves a failure. He is torn between the demands of bourgeois civilization, governed by money, and the ideal of freedom, consisting of living simply within nature. He then takes refuge by the side of the sweet Noemi on an island on the Danube.

Count János Buttler rushes home to his parents and his beloved for the school holidays. On the way, they stop at Baron Dőry's house, where János is deviously trapped. The protagonist of the story is Flora, a teacher who wants to teach in the village, in accordance with her vocation and her oath. Aware of her truth, she defies them, but can only count on the sympathy of the old priest. Márton Csorba chases the officer who has approached his wife. András Bakaj is on his way to fetch a doctor for his sick daughter, but the fleeing officer tries to take his horse. In the scuffle, a gun accidentally goes off, wounding the officer to death, who is robbed by a beggar. The bailiff arrests Csorba, who arrives on the scene. Bakaj does not have the strength to give himself up because of his sick daughter, so Csorba is sentenced to 15 years for murder.

After a heart attack, landowner Ferdinand Kerekházy summons his son Ferko Kerekházy from abroad, who, to his conservative father's dismay, sends a wagonload of machines ahead to set up an irrigation system and turn the saline, barely productive fields into fertile ones. The old count doesn't want to hear about his son's plans, and wants Ferko to marry Baroness Zólyomi. Since his son refuses, he disowns him. With persistent work, and the support of the mayor and a young engineer from Pest, the irrigation plan is realized. When the old count, who is always dreaming of grandchildren, realises that his son and the mayor's daughter have fallen in love, he reconciles with Ferko and asks her to marry him.

The millionaire grandson of entrepreneur Dénes Bartos is hired as a tutor. Gábor Horváth Horváth of Monori, a doctor, drops his Monori name and goes down to Bartos Castle as Gábor Horváth to earn money to become independent of his industrialist father. His apprentice Gyurika is not the cutest kid, it has to be said, but his sister Lilian is really beautiful... And that's enough for a romantic, peaceful film.

Klári lives in Pest with her widowed mother and works at a china-store. But she is a little clumsy and causes trouble everywhere.

Janka, a girl coming from an impoverished noble family plays the role of a fun-loving, shallow rich girl to get jobs for her parents in a countryside mansion.

The villa in the story of László Vadnai is for sale. The owner goes away and leaves the house to his butler, who also entrusts its safekeeping to an old friend. The friend immediately moves in with his niece, and two swindlers appear. But who is the seller and who is the buyer, and why the villa has to be sold at all, is a question that is only answered satisfactorily at the end of the film, after a lot of wall-crawling humour.

Balazs, who is married to Polika, welcomes his friend Viktor who pays him a surprise visit, unaware that Viktor and Polika dated each other in their adolescent years.
