A few days from a daily life of a regular school in Hungary during fifties.

On New Year's Eve in 1956 the artist couple, the actor János and the dancer Viki are hastily packing. While they are waiting for the car, which is to take them across the border, their entire life is replayed in front of their eyes.

The story, which takes place in the reform era, centres around Mrs. Déry, a legendary actress, who, along with her fellow actors and actresses, travels around the country to become the herald of the Hungarian language, performing in villages and towns up and down the land as strolling players, a woman who is not put off by the prospect of starvation and the dearth of a home to return to and security to live in.

A Hungarian soldier is taken prisoner by the Russians and sent to a Siberian prison camp. Meanwhile the years of loneliness are too much for his wife to bear.

The Takács family receive a marriage proposal, but Ágnes does not like the suitor.

While skillfully managing his wife's fortune, entrepreneur Tímar becomes an important wholesaler of wheat and exports his products to Brazil. But his marriage of convenience proves a failure. He is torn between the demands of bourgeois civilization, governed by money, and the ideal of freedom, consisting of living simply within nature. He then takes refuge by the side of the sweet Noemi on an island on the Danube.

Count János Buttler rushes home to his parents and his beloved for the school holidays. On the way, they stop at Baron Dőry's house, where János is deviously trapped. In the presence of false witnesses, he is forcibly married to Baron Dőry's pregnant daughter. The swearing priest is the father of the unborn child. Although Buttler, his family and friends do their utmost to have the marriage annulled, the Church and the court, fearing for his authority, will not allow it. John Buttler and his lover therefore choose another way to divorce.

Dr Péter Gergely, assistant professor at the University of Budapest, and his wife Mária celebrate their wedding anniversary. They are listening to Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. VI when he is called in sick. Left alone, she goes to an address given by an unknown caller, where she finds her husband in the arms of a strange woman. She does not believe in her husband's innocence, divorces him and marries the lawyer Dr. Tibor Máté, who has been besieging her for years. In despair, Peter attempts suicide, and the unknown girl who caused the tragedy appears at his bedside. The journalist István Bálint discovers that the girl was paid off by Dr. Máté and unmasks the instigator. Peter recovers, but the excitement causes him to lose his memory. Mary and the doctor reminisce about their wedding anniversary. The experiment succeeds, he remembers everything, and they resume their life together where they left off: listening to Tchaikovsky's symphony.

It rarely happens that a parent is not happy that their son is serious, hardworking and interested in nothing but work and the land. Well, our Péter Tamássy is like that. Péter's son is only interested in farming, so the father, who was a playboy in his youth, decides that before Péter gets married, he will introduce him to society a little. The hero of the story taking place at the end of the twenties is the modest civil servant, doctor Kopjáss who is suddenly appointed to be the chief attorney of Zsarátnok city. He realises slowly that his immaculate name was needed as a cover for the corrupt loan transactions handled by the lords of the city.

Anni, a young woman on the verge of divorce, moves into a hotel until the trial, where she meets a charming young man, Albert Sándor. Despite the fact that the lawsuit would prevent Anni from getting involved in a new relationship, she agrees to a compromising meeting. Only on the day of the trial does it become clear that Albert Sándor is the lawyer of Anni's husband, who doesn't want to hear about the divorce, and has been keeping a private eye on her. Anni thinks she is being set up.
