Frank Fay hosts a jamboree that, among its 70+ stars, features bicyclers, boxing champ Georges Carpentier, chorines in terpsichore kickery, sister acts, Myrna Loy in two-strip Technicolor as an exotic Far East beauty, John Barrymore in a Shakespearean soliloquy (adding an on-screen voice to his legendary profile for the first time) and Winnie Lightner famously warbling the joys of Singing in the Bathtub. Young Sandra De Hault arrives by ship in Sacramento, California, during the 1849 Gold Rush. While on board she adopted three children whose mother had died during the voyage. While in Sacramento she is saved from the attentions of a violent drunk by Stanton Holliday, an agent for eastern banker John Grey. They fall for each other, but Sandra believes that the daughter of Halliday's boss is in love with him, and not wanting to hurt his career she leaves town.

Rowdy Dyer, the weak but tough-acting son of wealthy rancher Dynamite Dyer, greets the stage in which his sister Clare is arriving by disguising himself as a bandit. He fires a shot that causes the horses to bolt. Cowpuncher Arizona Allen stops the horses but is shot at by passenger Dale Collins, the bank manager. Dynamite hires Arizona, and Clare asks him to look after Rowdy. Arizona saves Rowdy from being fleeced by gambler Buck Zaney, thus incurring Zaney's enmity.

Bruce will have none of it, so to get him to drop her she attempts to get 'caught' in an innocent date with her employment agency contact, Haines. Unfortunately, Haines has different ideas about their encounter and will not take "no" for an answer so Dixie is forced to clock him with an urn, killing him. Dixie's trial for murder leads to a courtroom confrontation between father and son, with her fate resting in the balance.

The south sea island Tonga is full of plantations and scoundrels. Ellen Bradford arrives expecting marriage to respectable and successful plantation owner only to find he is a drunk and gambler. Being the only white woman she is the desire of scoundrels and cut-throats.
