Ramayan is a highly successful and phenomenally popular Indian epic television series created, written, and directed by Ramanand Sagar. The 78 episode series originally aired weekly on Doordarshan from 25 January 1987, to 31 July 1988, on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. IST. It is a television adaptation of the ancient Indian Hindu religious epic of the same name and is primarily based on Valmiki's Ramayan and Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas. It is also partly derived from portions of Kamban's Ramavataram and other works.

A rich businessman, after being killed by his unfaithful wife and her lover, comes back to life as a terrifying entity who is out for revenge on couples who are unfaithful. As more horrible murders take place, a police inspector has to solve the mystery of a vengeful spirit who will not allow betrayal to go unpunished.

Murder and political intrigue kick off a chain reaction of revenge in a small Indian village when the local zamindar, Dhurjan Singh (Amrish Puri), is convicted and jailed for killing Ranjeet (Biswajeet), a villager who opposed his policies. The animosity only intensifies when Dhurjan is released from prison and learns his son has been murdered in his absence. Anil Kapoor and Gulshan Grover co-star.
