Xaver Bimshofer is the richest peasant in the village; and therefore, his only daughter Lenerl should marry a guy, who is diligent enough to keep the exemplary farm running. But Bimshofer doesn’t know, that Lenerl has long been a couple with the servant Sepp. So he suspects that every young man in the village wants to conquer his poor, innocent daughter. Hans Brugger, a young engineer, wants to build a ski jump in an Alpine winter sports resort. The townspeople are enthusiastic about the project, hoping it will boost tourism, and consequently donate a large portion of the necessary construction funds. Only one villager refuses to participate: the owner of the local restaurant, the “Alpenhof,” is opposed to the idea.

Head waiter Leopold has been secretly in love with the hostess Josepha for a long time, but she only has eyes for Dr. Siedler, a guest in the White Horse Inn. Leopold tries to get Dr. Siedler interested in the daughter of Industrialist Giesecke, who would rather see his daughter married to Sigismund.

The villagers of Mauth are notorious for their stinginess. They are so thrifty that they can't even afford an organ for their church. When the mayor of Mauth goes to a wedding in the neighboring village, he attracts the ridicule of the entire pub society. Furious, he goes home and suggests to the local council that they should at least buy an organ to avert the ridicule from the village.

12-year-old Jakob helps out at his mother's vegetable stand and also carries customers' purchased goods home. One day, an old woman with a long nose comes to the stand and claims that the herbs are bad and were better 50 years ago. Jakob is upset that she holds all the herbs to her nose and crushes them: "Take it away from your long nose!" he shouts and hits her hand. "Don't you like it, my beautiful long nose?" the woman scoffs, "You should have one too, even longer than mine." Finally, she buys some cabbages, which she wants Jakob to carry home for her. Jakob resists but is persuaded by his mother. Other market women whisper whether the old woman is not the evil fairy Kräuterweis.

After 50 years of service, the district usher Johann Peter Neusigl is supposed to get awarded a Royal-Bavarian medal of merit. Since government director Steinbeißl has announced that he wants to witness the awarding ceremony in person, district magistrate Kranzeder decided to splash out. He organises, with his wife Amalie, a banquet in their parlour, although both of them rather begrudge Neusigl the award. But after all, it is necessary to cut a good figure for the dignitaries. As the government director arrives, after a few incidents during his journey, belated, the event, however, has already degenerated into a boozy carousal which culminates in a scuffle.

The rich and fun-loving brewery owner Xaver Bogenrieder has died. After the funeral, the mourners come to the pub for the funeral feast. The first trouble is already inevitable: It's all about the succession to the Unterbräu and which of the dignitaries will court the beautiful widow. The master brewer, who has long been a silent admirer of the widow, doesn't like this at all. Then the shepherd gives him an idea. The Unterbräu simply has to go around as a ghost, then the false admirers will stay away. Unfortunately, the gravedigger has the same idea, without the one knowing about the other.

Farmer Regina suffers greatly from her childlessness, because it means that the Hallwanger farm has no heir. A former suitor, whom she rejected for Martin Hallwanger's sake, also torments her with references to her childlessness.

For decades, the villagers of Haselbach have argued and fought with those of Banzing. But this should finally come to an end: The local councillors decide to reconcile the two villages and the mayors want to seal the peace by marrying off their children. They agree that they don't want to marry each other and that their fathers are only acting out of greed. When they decide to revolt against their elders, they are unexpectedly supported by a "stranger" who brings the reason for the dispute between Haselbach and Banzing out of the dark: the Holledauer Schimmel.
