When they end up separating, Ivan finds comfort with Josza, a pretty girl, much more stable than Edit, but far less glamorous. When Edit eventually re-enters Ivan’s life, he can’t resist her. A Hungarian family forced to flee the Communist country for the United States must leave a young daughter behind. Six years later, the family arranges to bring the absent daughter to the United States where she has trouble adjusting. The daughter then decides to travel to Budapest to discover her identity.

Ernő, under a pseudonym, takes up a position as a music teacher at a girls' school under the patronage of his grandmother, Countess Szerémy, to meet one of the pretty students, Martha, who later turns out to be the child of her grandmother's disowned son. The Countess agrees to the young couple's marriage, but Márta falls in love with Colonel Örkényi's nephew Kálmán. In the meantime, Ernő's feelings change, and he meets Kálmán's sister Piroska, whom he would prefer to marry. The Colonel, whose planned marriage to Countess Serémy was prevented by her mother when he was young, refuses to hear of it.

The protagonist of the story is Flora, a teacher who wants to teach in the village, in accordance with her vocation and her oath. Her beauty and purity bring her into conflict with the local authorities and with the landowning family of the countryside. Aware of her truth, she defies them, but can only count on the sympathy of the old priest. István Nagy Jr., the idle, dissolute landowner's son, falls in love with Flóra, and love changes him: he takes her side, exposing the lecherous hypocrites.

A private eye is hired by an insurance company to investigate a shipping magnate suspected of deliberately sinking his own ships for the insurance money. He finds himself involved in a web of deception, double-crossing and murder.

Photographer Mátyás Blazsek lives in City Park with his daughter, Éva. Blazsek is modernizing his business and trying to make a name for himself as an enterprising photojournalist; he orchestrates a minor accident—planning to photograph Miklós Dénes, the inventor of the television, slipping on a melon rind as he returns home from London. The young man slips just as planned and grabs hold of Éva Blazsek, who is interviewing him; the sensational photo report subsequently appears in the newspapers with the caption "Miklós Dénes and His Fiancée."
