A poor miner, Kuba Dařbuján, cares for his wife Markýtka and eleven children. When a newborn arrives, he seeks a godfather and, finding only Death fair to all, accepts a pact: as a doctor whom Death accompanies at the foot of a patient’s bed, he can heal; but if Death stands at the head, no cure is possible. The girl was kidnapped by the hypnotist Lascani, who performs in a variety show and has just arrived in Pavla's hometown on his travels. He completely controls his victim and Pavla doesn't remember anything. She has to act as his "medium" with Lascani and even has to be his lover. Tragicomic events in the idyllic town of Rukapán reveal both the prejudices of the local residents and their solidarity. The chronicle of the town of Rukapán captures the funny and tragic fates of its inhabitants at the end of the nineteenth century. Poacher Matěj saves the council of Zimmerheier in a buried mine, mayor Buzek is warned by an angel to stop drinking, and other events form a mosaic of the small town.

Antique dealer Kohout is not a bad person. However, he has an ideal: to be the unlimited master at home. Therefore, he does not see his wife's wishes, nor the fact that his daughter Helena has found a groom, that his other daughter has fallen in love, and that his son is a passionate swimmer. He would like to run their lives according to his old-fashioned ideas. However, Zdenka's suitor, engineer Bečvář, uses a trap to gain Kohout's favor. A story of two story of two children tossed between their indifferent parents and a progressive boarding school.

The richest farmer and at the same time mayor Dubský and first councilman Bušek are constantly competing for supremacy. Their rivalry affects not only the fates of their families, but also the entire village, in which every problem, even the smallest one, everything that the board of directors discusses becomes a battleground for the two rivals. And it is not just about who will be appointed night watchman due to the increasing thefts. It is also about the love of Václav, Dubský's son, and Verunka, the daughter of councilman Bušek.

The musical clowns Rik and Rak, father Švamberk and his daughter Zdeňka, are struggling miserably on the pilgrimage. Zdeňka reveals to the old clown Tom that her father grew up in the nearby Lípov castle, but his father disinherited it because of his marriage to a comedian. On Tom's advice, Zdeňka sends her grandfather a promotional photo of herself asking to meet him.
