A blockbuster drama that depicts the lives of the people who colored the dawn of modern Japan, centering on a woman who rose from a courtesan to the wife of the prime minister, and through the wives of former Meiji military commanders, many of whom were geishas.

An unscheduled late night train arrives at Tokyo station on 15 August, the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II. Boarding the train are spirits of great men who died honourable deaths in the war more than 60 years ago. They have come to the modern world to see their homeland as a peaceful country and to tell the lingering spirits of the war dead about the current conditions.

The drama stars Beat Takeshi as General Hideki Tojo, who served as Prime Minister of Japan during World War II and was later executed as a war criminal. The story's theme is said to be a look at how the Pacific War began, focusing mostly on the three month period between the Imperial Conference (Gozen Kaigi) on September 6, 1941, and the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Based on a story written by actress and author Hideko Takamine. Kimizuru Kawamoto is a popular geisha in Shitaya, Tokyo in 1926. Kimizuru is pregnant with the child of Hiroshi, the son of an large company's president, who tells her to wait for marriage until he returns from Germany in 3 years.

Based on novel by Kuniko Mukoda, "Haha no Okurimono" tells the story of a soon to be married couple and their respective mothers. On the eve of Akiko and Masaaki's wedding, Akikio's mother Nobue shows up. Many years when ago, Akiko's mother ran off with a married man and since then Nobue has dropped all relations with her mother, even telling Masaaki that her mother was dead.

The drama is set on the Twilight Express, Japan's longest overnight train service, which runs approximately 22 hours between Osaka and Sapporo. Nakayama and Sato play Chie and Keisuke, two lovers who have decided to part ways at the end of the journey. Chie already has a family but has been carrying on a passionate, secret affair with Keisuke. The story mainly takes place in their suite room on the train. The drama was filmed aboard the actual Twilight Express with cooperation from the JR West company, which operates the train service.
