The epic film is based on the motifs of Vilis Lācis' novel "The Zītari Family". The tragedy of the Zītari family is a model of Latvian national history. With the beginning of World War I, the patriarchal way of life of Captain Andrejs and his wife Alvīne, their children Kārlis, Ings, Ernests, Elza and Janka changes, with years spent at work and in rare, modest celebrations. Kārlis voluntarily goes to the front, Ingus disappears without a trace on long sea voyages. Not wanting to live in the territory occupied by the German army, the Zītari evacuate to the distant Altai region. The unusually difficult living conditions and the drastically changing political situation of the post-revolutionary period also affect each member of the Zītari family. When the opportunity arises to return to Latvia, Andrejs and Alvīne are no longer among the living. The old sailor's nest has collapsed and the young Zītari are no longer able to preserve their father's house - all the property is stolen.

Latvia in the late 19th century. Edgars, the coachman of Alaine manor, loves Kristine, the washerwoman's daughter, although he is too hot-headed for Kristine's mother to consider him a good suitor for his daughter. Servant Viskrelis and stable boy Sutka try to tempt Edgars to a life of drinking and a relationship with the barmaid Matilde. Meanwhile, Kristine is courted by a rich landowner, Akmentins.

Latvia, 1980s. While striving for achievements in the Soviet kolhoz competition, people have forgotten to take care of their surroundings and their loved ones. The Latvian countryside is overwhelmed by alcoholism, and the chairman of the kolhoz is keeping the newly built culture hub locked up so that public would not "spoil it". Vitolds, the new secretary of the Young Communist League is ready to combat all the negative issues. However, it's important to do everything with moderation, as otherwise one may fall from one side of a ditch to another.

A group of men go under-ice fishing, but find themselves trapped on a piece of ice, that has broken off. As they are drifting through the sea, the tension between them rises.

A young boy finds a watch with an engraving in Spanish saying that the watch belongs to Captain Enrico, and adventures begin...

The times of serfdom in Latvia. Brothers Tom, Michelis and Andris, driven to despair by the cruelty of the Dormuizh landowner, decide to start a liberation struggle. Tom and Michelis go into the forest and tame a wolf pack there. Taking advantage of the folk legend that a person can turn into a werewolf and live in his guise, the brothers intend to fight the German barons with the help of a wolf pack controlled by them and a messenger Andris, who has remained in the village for the time being...

Artūrs comes back to Riga after serving in army and faces changes because of his years of absence- his girlfriend has met another man, his work in a factory in a superior position brings changes to relationships with acquaintances.

The events of the film take place in Latvia during the 1930s to the 1950s. Klinta, a young, poor, and naive villager, studies music in a nearby provincial Latvian town. Her meeting with the owner of a wealthy farm, Olavs, becomes fateful for the girl.

When old auntie Mirta succeeds in a lottery and wins a car which she cannot use herself, all sorts of family members suddenly appear by her side, hoping to get the car after their auntie's death. Until then, they had never helped Mirta, it was only her neighbours who supported her in her old age. Now, her nephew Ēriks with his wife and son, and her ex-daughter-in-law Olita with her second husband and daughter, would all love to get their hands on the car that's in the colour of Midsummer's Eve.

Lapinsh was removed from his position and stripped of his captain’s license after an accident that occurred more than six months ago—the supertrawler "Malachite" ran aground. The case was examined by the court. In search of the truth, Vasiliev followed the trail of these dramatic events...

Captain Arvīds receives devastating news that his young daughter has died after surgery, while young sailor Juris, on his first voyage to earn money for a car, is shattered by a telegram from his newlywed wife telling him she no longer wants him to return home. As grief, loneliness, and despair close in far from shore, the men are forced to confront the emotional toll of life at sea.

In this movie (based on a true story) within a movie, a director tries to film the tale of an old KGB activist living in a parish house. In the summer of 1941 the activist tortured and killed Latvians in the cellar of the house. Although the old man hires others to brick over the cellar door, the murdered people keep coming through the stones and never leave him in peace. Unbeknownst to the film makers, the "real" KGB activist, now an aged drunk, is milling about the film set. Moreover, the director and lead actor are competing for the love of the lead actress, and the film's producer wants the director to re-shoot parts of the movie.
