The main story concerns Anna, a successful but lonely novelist, who falls for Finola, a vivacious young writing student, who is involved with the troubled Cindy. Paul, keen on Anna, is pursued by Martin; and Evan and Skye, a young couple, experience problems.

A multi-layered narrative drama about ordinary people and their struggles and joys with life. Blue Notes is composed of five tales about people who are "blue": a married man struggles by with depression; his son spends his days drifting; a young woman reacts to being abused by her partner; a heroin addict attempts to start a career in music; and a lonely man, bereft of family, looks for a way to connect with others.

A portrait of Melbourne in Spring '04 (September/October), a mosaic of different stories: an angel desires to be human; a young couple cope with long-distance relating; a novelist unexpectedly falls pregnant; a woman from London discovers Melbourne; and a disenfranchised man, with a gambling debt, becomes involved with an underworld gang.

Ali Alizadeh reads English translations of Rumi and Hafiz, as well as his own contemporary Sufi poems.
