A Russian spy is assigned to steal sensitive information from NATO about military mobilisation. Without much intelligence of his own, the distrusted Soviet intelligence agent needs all the help he can get from his 'talented' partner Penelope Lightfeather as they scatter around the French countryside for secret rendezvous while trying to avoid being caught by counterintelligence agents and distrustful communist operatives.

Jacques and Gisèle, who are just married, are starting their honeymoon. But at nightfall, on their way to marital bliss, their car chooses to break down and the lovebirds find themselves stranded in the village of Montigny. Gaston Duboutois and Catherine Berton love each other, and are about to play Romeo and Juliet in their small provincial town. The industrialist Duboutois is opposed to his accountant Berton, both of whom are running for parliament. Tempers flare and invective quickly escalates. In the end, Duboutois wins and Berton loses his position. Although futile and foolish, it's the excellent Mme Duboutois who brings peace to the situation, brings about reconciliation and helps the two children to unite.

Director Jean Delannoy's immediate followup to his brilliant Les Jeux sont Faits was the more conventional Aux Yeux du Souvenir (aka Souvenir and To the Eyes of Memory). The film is based on a true story, wherein an France airliner managed to survive a journey from Rio De Janeiro to Dakar with two of its engines incapacitated. To this already intensely dramatic situation has been added a romantic subplot involving Claire Magny (Michele Morgan) and Jacques Forester (Jean Marais). The love story adds very little to the film; fortunately, neither does it detract from the film's overall quality. As was the case with many French productions of the 1940s, Aux Yeux du Souvenir benefits immeasurably from the Wagnerian musical score by Georges Auric.
