Kenji Watanabe

Fictionalised account of the story of the he Chōshū Five (長州五傑 Chōshū Goketsu) who travelled to and studied in Britain in 1863 while Japan was still under sakoku (鎖国 "locked country").

An astronaut crashes in the middle of nowhere. A young woman searches for her family in an abandoned urban wasteland. A prisoner prepares for a space program that will make him the first human being on Mars.

With the sound of a beautiful koto (Japanese zither) and the narration "Kaasan, kaasan, kaasan, I'm marching in the desert", the camera roams the city. Facing the ground, the wall, the road, and eventually the red blood on the snow, the filmmaker continues to call out "Mama, Mama, Mama". This five-minute film, made in just one day, is an attempt to convey the artist's dramatic moment of breath in its rawest form.
