There is a lot of hustle and bustle in the gnome forest. Plop is busy baking 1000 plop-cookies, Kwebbel has to clean her mushroom and Klus is working on a great invention with Lui's help. But a storm is coming; Aunt Plap! She stays with her cousin Plop until he marries a gnome girl..

Lui is very proud of his new scooter, but then Klus breaks the wheel. Oh no, what now? The gnomes travel to a toy store to buy a new wheel. While Plop, Kwebbel and Lui look for a wheel, Klus has fun with all the toys. But what a mess he makes of it! He has to clean it all up, but a talking bear helps Klus with the annoying task..

The gnomes find an egg and decide to take care of it together. But whose egg is it? That of a bird? A snake? Or a crocodile? No, it's a cute little duckling. Kwebbel takes care of the young, while Klus and Lui look for the mother duck..

Firegnome Kwiek comes to the gnome forest to visit his great-nephew Lui. Plop, Smal, Klus and Kwebbel are shocked when they see Kwiek, because he looks like an exact copy of Lui. Only Smul has a wicked plan, he wants to steal eggs in revenge because the gnome Easter Bunny once forgot about him. But of course that turns out to be a misunderstanding...

Because of a misunderstanding, Plop turns into the new king! Klus, Kwebbel and Lui move to the palace, while Plop is trained to become royalty, but what happened to the real heir of the throne?

Aunt Plap allows Plop and his friends to come and stay in her holiday mushroom on the flower meadow, but Klus finds a caterpillar and takes it in as his new pet. What starts as a new friend quickly becomes the other gnomes' worst nightmare..

There they stumble upon an extraordinary invention; a traveling machine. When Pruts has to leave unexpectedly, Klus and Kwebbel try to secretly bring Snorre from the South Pole to them. The gnomes receive a strange letter from a mouse in distress. She has been trapped in a hole for days because the cat wants to eat her. When they arrive at the house, it turns out that someone else is behind the letter.

It's Plop's birthday and that, of course, has to be celebrated. Kwebbel, Klus and Lui send Plop into the woods for a long, relaxing walk so they can prepare the party in the meanwhile. Hugo Claus rewrote and directed Friday as the cinematic version of his original 1969 play of the same name. Just as in the play, the story begins with the theme of incest, as the father Georges (Frank Aendenboom) returns from serving his jail sentence for that crime. Unlike the earlier play, however, the film does not emphasize that aspect of the story. When Georges gets home he finds out that his wife Jeanne (Kitty Courbois) has had an illegitimate child by a younger man, Erik (Herbert Flack), and now both of them must somehow try to return to a normal life, given their only too obvious lapses in moral judgment. As the husband and wife try hard to accommodate each other's failings and start to get to know each other again, Erik comes back into the picture. Now the three of them must resolve the deep-seated conflicts that brought them to this emotionally-wrought juncture of love and betrayal.
