Caroline Cilburn and her 11-year-old brother Jody have lived with their stepmother Diana in London since their father died. Her older brother Angus works on an oil rig off the west coast of Scotland. Summer 1914, Vienna. Franz, a handsome young hussar lieutenant, falls in love with Sissi, daughter of the Austrian Generalissimo. Shortly afterwards, the First World War breaks out. It provides Franz with the perfect opportunity to earn his stripes and claim the girl's hand in marriage.

After Willy Unterkofer, an old acquaintance of the Germingers, is murdered, Franz Junior takes over the investigation together with Karl and Anna and a family quarrel soon arises. Franz Senior and Erika seem to want to steer the youngsters in a certain direction. Their credo is that the past should be put to rest, but this makes Franz Junior and Anna even more curious about what the seniors are hiding. The film is based on the memoirs of Hamburg burglar Julius Adolf Petersen (1882-1933), who became famous as "Lord of Barmbeck". Petersen owed his status as a folk hero to the fact that he did not use any physical violence during his raids and only stole from rich people. After several times escaping, Petersen was finally sentenced to a long prison term. With no prospect of release, he took his own life in 1933.
