As the Allied forces approach Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to take all of France's greatest paintings to Germany. He manages to secure a train to transport the valuable art works even as the chaos of retreat descends upon them. The French resistance however wants to stop them from stealing their national treasures but have received orders from London that they are not to be destroyed. The station master, Labiche, is tasked with scheduling the train and making it all happen smoothly but he is also part of a dwindling group of resistance fighters tasked with preventing the theft. He and others stage an elaborate ruse to keep the train from ever leaving French territory.

During World War II, convicts are recruited by the Allies for an extremely hazardous mission.

Thomas hitchhikes from Hamburg to Munich where he meets his ex-girlfriend, Peggy. Thomas doesn't have a bed for the night and goes home with Peggy, not knowing that she and her four roommates have all made a strange pact.

March, 1945: The insecure and hesitant reserve lieutenant Felix Bleck receives orders to lead a transport of 40 prisoners to the Western Front, where the men are to be burned up in a punishment battalion. On the way there, Bleck realizes the inhuman futility of his assignment and makes a fateful decision.

Michel, a young man of Ukrainian origin, flees the Red Army and joins the International Brigades in Perpignan to fight Franco. He was arrested for being Russian, Communist and deserter. He was wounded by his involvement, but fell in love with an American journalist.

Gustl Leubelfing, daughter of the mayor of Nuremberg adores the king of the Swedes. So she happily substitutes her brother as Gustav Adolf's page instead of marrying her fiancée Roland. Of course she has to hide that she's a woman, especially when they go into war against Wallenstein.
