In 1917, the people of the Russian Empire are no longer willing to fight Germany, but the bourgeois government of Alexander Kerensky is unwilling to defy its imperialist allies and stop the war. Only Vladimir Lenin's Bolshevik Party is resolute in calling for peace. In the front, the soldiers of one battalion elect three delegates to travel to St. Petersburg with donations the troops collected for the Pravda newspaper: Gudushauri, Panasiuk and Ershov. The three arrive in the capital and describe the horrendous conditions in which the soldiers live to Joseph Stalin, Lenin's trusted aid and colleague. They join the Bolsheviks and take part in the storming of the Winter Palace, led by Stalin and Lenin. Stalin announces that the great dawn of revolution has broken.

The aging writer Shelestov falls passionately in love with a young actress Olga Rogina and wants to marry her. They spend many evenings together and, it seems, their story is approaching a happy denouement. But suddenly, a plane of a famous aviator lands near the town because of a plane breakdown. Romantic Olga falls in love with him and, leaving Shelestov, flies away with the pilot of the plane. The writer becomes desperate and commits suicide.

In 1907, the Russian authorities learn that a revolutionary known as 'Granddad' is living in hiding with his brother. The revolutionary is soon arrested and sent to Siberia. After ten years of struggling to survive in harsh conditions, he is finally released when the Tsarist government is overthrown in February 1917. He is welcomed home as a hero, but he soon finds that even his own son has different views than he does about the future of Russia.

At the same time, enchanted by her beauty, another man named Jeremiah Tsarba decides to kidnap her. When Esma refuses to share bed with him Jeremiah mercilessly kills her and when faced by accusations avoids punishment with the help of Valida, an influential nobleman’s daughter. But even here, the businessmen create a situation of slavery for the settlers. The manager of the firm marries the girl he seduced to one of the colonists, a former vagrant. The girl suffers greatly from this farce and tries to return home. Her old father fights Jacob. Jacob knocks the old man down. The colonists' patience runs out and they march against the businessmen.
