Rare was the film in 1973 that incorporated the star's name in the title. One of the few such films was Screaming Ninja, aka Wang Yu, King of Boxing. The story is set in China in the early 1900x. Essentially playing an extension of himself, action-star Wang-Yu spends much of the time defending himself against evil martial-arts masters. He also tries to make sense of a tragic incident in his past.

In the waning days of the Ming dynasty, Japanese marauders raid villages on the Chinese coast. When Emperor Xian Feng (1831-1861) favourite concubine Cao died, he had her secretly buried in a huge cavern of the remote Qing Gang Mountains. Rumour has it that the "Eternal night-shining Pearl" was buried with her. About 20 years later it appears that 1 of 8 palace maiden, chosen to follow her to the death, escaped and is now most wanted by a bunch of unscrupulous bandits, who want her to lead to them to that hidden location. They encounter unexpected resistance, when they are opposed by a quintet of women fighters and a male government official.

The plot has to do with a reign of terror conducted by a mysterious killer dubbed "Poison Dart," who is hitting all kinds of prominent people with poison darts.

Two hitmen arrive in a small town, each becoming aware of the other due to a mix-up over intended targets. One killer (Yi Chang) falls for a girl (Chung-Erh Lung) whose brother (Dong Wai) is in trouble. This leads Chang to investigate the employer of the other killer (Don Wong).

During the Sung dynasty, Ch'in Kuei, a corrupt premier, orders the arrest of Yüeh Fei, an heroic general. Ling Yu Fong, an idealistic follower of the general, recruits a small force to free him, failing miserably, losing most of his troops and sustaining wounds. He's hidden and nursed back to health by a troupe of traveling acrobats, two brothers and two sisters. One of the sisters falls in love with Ling. He asks them to help him free the general, and the five undertake this quest against great odds. The general himself brings an element into the story that his liberators do not anticipate.

Things appear to be no better when Bruce comes to the United States to begin teaching, and is under constant attack by rival martial artists, but all the while his unorthodox style is beginning to catch on. Finally he becomes an international sensation as a movie star with a wife, kids, money, and everything he's always wanted - who then must fight for both his life and his reputation back home in Hong Kong.
