Set during the insurgency of 1863, the story focuses on a tragic romance between a poor gentlewoman and a rebel noble. He eventually finds shelter and care from a landsteward's daughter, hiding in a burned-out manor with an old servant.

Before the war, at a carnival ball, she met the handsome Lech Oleszkiewicz. In September, war broke out. Hanna meets the engineer again and spends the night with him. In the morning, the man tells her that he is married. Hanna breaks off the relationship.

Young residents of a town near Poznań are getting ready to fight the Germans.

The film is set in the summer of 1944. The Home Army branch operating in the Sądecki region is decimated by the Germans during an attempt to take over the drop of weapons and ammunition from England. About 20 soldiers break out of the encirclement, including the commander - Major "Dziadek" - and his deputy - Captain Stańczyk. Partisans are trying to get to the ruins of a nearby castle, where the last ammo crate is supposed to have landed.

The style of narration and the way of filming make the film a poignant study of the writer's inner disintegration. By emphasizing the painterly quality of the image and introducing dreamlike themes, Kluba captures on screen the characteristics of both Witkacy's playwriting and painting.

The young count makes a bet with his friends about who will be the first to win the favor of a girl they meet. The opportunity to meet her arises unexpectedly quickly.
