Gianfranco Baruchello
Born 1924-08-29 · Livorno, Italy
(Livorno, 1924) is a unique figure on the Italian art scene, in dialogue with the international avant-gardes, including the philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. In over 50 years of activity he has drawn, painted, written, and produced happenings, films and videos. After training in the Parisian atmosphere of nouveau réalisme, he went to New York, where he came into contact with abstract expressionism and pop art. His first solo show dates back to 1963, at Galleria La Tartaruga, also the year of his decisive meeting with Marcel Duchamp. Since 1963, the year in which he made Il grado zero del paesaggio,he has made over fifty films and videos; the best known on an international level remains La verifica incerta 1964–65, made with Alberto Grifi. In 2014–15 a retrospective of his work has been held at the Deichtorhallen Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg, and ZKM, Karlsruhe.

Ritratto di Gianfranco Baruchello

Per una giornata di malumore nazionale
1969
NRThe film is the story of the crude destruction, meticulously done by the artist himself, of a frozen turkey produced in America. The meat is placed in a wooden box and buried in a grave in a field. Dedicated to the fundamental concepts of the ‘lay military priesthood’ (terminology typical of the generals): discipline, honour and other sacred duties, the film is part of a trilogy by Baruchello against the Vietnam War. —Tate Modern

6.6A short film containing a collection of clips from various Hollywood movies.
Uncertain Verification
1965
NRCollective manifesto by the members of C.C.I. It is a collective film, the result of an operation devoid of any aesthetic purpose: to verify the existence of any harmony between a fairly large group (twelve people) of members of the independent Cooperative. Someone, who had the idea, turned 60 meters of Ektachrome according to the moods –or discontent – of the moment and gave them to others to see. The others reacted, each with their own piece. It was then thought to call the film “circular letter”. It was not so simple and so quick: the operation, which started in June of ’68, ended in March of ’69.
Tutto, tutto nello stesso istante
1969
NRAn allegory on man's inhumanity. Pink dolls are sandwiched into bread rolls in a long sequence then stuffed in a sack and thrown in the sea by two children. A naked, drowned negro is washed ashore and discovered by a naked white child. The soundtrack is of Vietnamese children's songs.

Quaranta immagini
1996
The video takes its cue from the "Notizie in 2 minuti" column on the last page of the national daily, the Corriere della Sera, which gives the most important news of the day in a single column, in a very concise form. Baruchello transfers this concept from paper to video, with the camera reading the newspaper. The video, which lasts precisely two minutes, is a montage of still images taken from the entire newspaper, which is leafed through, showing both texts and images. The titles and articles are almost never taken in their entirety, but the fragments we see are enough to give an idea of what they are about: politics, entertainment, sport, shows, art, crime news, current affairs, the economy or science. The pictures are shown in their entirety, but since they have no captions, they are taken out of context. The last sequence of the video shows newspaper closed on the first page. The entire video is accompanied by a rap song in English.
